Otis Trio
In 2007, three musicians from St. Andre, an industrial, grey town in the state of São Paulo, got together to jam to some jazz standards. With the rehearsals becoming more frequent, their improvisation skills started to take control, putting aside the jazz numbers that were the main focus at first, bringing to light tunes with the influence of Be-bop, Free jazz, rock, hip-hop and electronic music. Otis Trio may be very much of the here and now but in terms of inspiration and stylistic direction their roots lie the European and American free jazz scenes of the 60s and 70s. Some five years in gestation and recorded on vintage analogue equipment for period authenticity, 74 Club is on occasion both deftly subtle and furiously intense with the standard trio configuration of guitar, bass and drums augmented with both vibes and a posse of free blowing horn players who together create a sound which reverberates with echoes of Ornette Coleman, Sonny Sharrock and Pharoah Sanders.
